Safety Features in The 2010 Honda Accord

The 2010 Honda Accord offers a variety of safety features. Overall, the Accord did well in government safety tests; both the coupe and the 4-door scored a five star safety rating. Although many safety features are now standard in the Accord, some are not. For example, traction control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror do not come standard.

For driving and steering, the Accord comes standard with 4-wheel ABS (anti-lock braking system), Vehicle Stability Assist, and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System which all work together to insure safety under unexpected driving conditions. ABS helps a driver to avoid wheel lock-up and skidding in the event of an emergency stopping situation. Vehicle Stability Assist helps to correct oversteer and understeer if faced with a need for obstacle avoidance or other emergency steering situations. Additionally, engine power is reduced and brake pressure is applied to the outside wheels. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System helps to insure the tires are properly inflated by warning the driver of low tire pressure, a hazardous driving concern.

The Accord has a total of six standard airbags. Front, front side and head curtain side airbags can work alone or all together to protect passengers in the event of an accident. Front airbags deploy in the event of a front end collision, protecting front passengers from injuries to the upper body. The passenger side airbag cannot be turned off although it is both activated and deactivated by the front passenger’s weight. If the passenger is under a certain weight or there is nobody sitting in the front passenger seat, the airbag will not deploy. Front side airbags protect the torso for front seat drivers. Head curtain airbags drop down like a curtain in the front and the rear seat of the Accord to protect passengers from glass or impact.
